With 2016 just around the corner and big events expected around the country as we celebrate the centenary of the 1916 Rising, “no reassurances” can be given by Leitrim County Council to remember Sean Mac Diarmada.
Leitrim County Council saved €10,000 this year because the Sean Mac Diarmada Summer School in Kiltyclogher was not held. But this saving will not go towards the planning for a massive event in Mac Diarmada’s honour in 2016.
Cllr Sean McDermott asked the County Manager about funding and plans for the massive date in 2016. Jackie Maguire said the council can give “no reassurances” at this point and will need to “look at the level of funding” in the future. She said spending on discretionary items have been halted.
Cllr Sean McGowan also asked about any progress made in relation to the development of a centre in recognition of John McGahern. He was told that “There are no plans currently in relation to the development of such a centre. However if any relevant local groups have a desire to advance such a project the Council will be happy to advise.”
