Maybe it is his youth or maybe it is the hard won experience he has already gained in Leitrim colours but Jack Foley declared his pride in his teammates after last Wednesday’s Eirgrid Connacht U20 Championship clash in Markievicz Park, remarking “that’s football” when asked for his reaction to the contest.

On a night when the 2-11 to 1-14 result felt almost like a defeat, the young Kiltubrid player simply remarked “That’s just football but just want to say I’m hugely proud of the boys, immensely proud - the character we showed. We’re unhappy with the draw but that is football at the end of the day, we fought hard, the result didn’t go our way and we just have to put our head down for Wednesday.”

Heads down seems to be a mantra for this team and Jack is firmly of the belief that Leitrim’s graph is rising: “It just shows the serious development of Leitrim football, we’re coming good now. The result against Mayo was massive, the draw against Sligo, look we haven’t come close to Sligo in how many years. It is a great performance, the draw we’re not happy about.

“It is a different mindset this year. The Senior result at the weekend was disappointing but we’re fully focused on the U20 championship here. Hopefully the results go our way next week, just keep doing what we’re doing and progressing Leitrim football.”
