TG4 Connacht Intermediate Final: St Mary's centre-back stresses ability in Leitrim camp after victory over Division 2 bound Roscommon

Leitrim were sick of losing big games says delighted Kasey Bruen

If there was a sense going into last Sunday’s TG4 Connacht LGFA IFC Final that Leitrim had something to prove, well Kasey Bruen summed up the feelings in the camp when she declared “There is a lot more to us than being in Division 4!”

It is not that Leitrim’s centre-back is getting carried away with herself, far from it as the St Mary’s player was keen to stress but there is a feeling in the Green & Gold camp that results haven’t reflected the talent in their squad and the work that has been going on over the past two years.

Beating a Division 2 bound Roscommon last Sunday only reinforces that notion according to Kasey: “I think it just goes to show that we played to our ability today and there is a lot more to us than being in Division 4.”

Admitting that she might “celebrate a little bit”, Kasey also revealed just what victory over Roscommon meant for this Leitrim squad: “It is a brilliant feeling - we’re getting a bit sick of losing the big games, getting so far and even in the national league, to get so far and then come away with a loss in the semi-final so it was great to come away with a win today.”

A strong defensive set-up stymied Roscommon’s attack with Kasey feeling that transitioning the ball quickly to the Leitrim attack paid dividends with Roscommon failing to register a goal shot during the contest: “I don’t think they had a shot on target - towards the end, that was what we were doing, pushing them out.

GOALS DO THE TRICK AGAIN AS LEITRIM REGAIN TG4 CONNACHT LGFA INTERMEDIATE CROWN

“It was nice to see that every ball was contested in there when they did try to get in but I think we were set up nicely. We were quick moving the ball forward, getting it to our scorers and I think that really helped. As everyone says, goals win games.”

As for the All-Ireland, Kasey is taking nothing for granted: “We’re well aware of the threat that we face going forward, Roscommon included so can’t wait for it.”
