Leitrim's Sarah Reynolds interviewed after the victory over Tyrone Picture: Willie Donnellan
She may have been a reluctant interviewee but Sarah Reynolds found the perfect words to describe the emotion of Leitrim’s dramatic win over Tyrone when she said “It is an unbelievable feeling - seeing all the young girls out here today, it is just class, a day I won’t forget!”
Sarah credited Leitrim’s mental resilience for the dramatic 4-12 to 5-8 victory in Ballinamore: “We really gave them the head start we didn’t want but the way we fought back, the way we set up, doing what we’re told to do.
“We didn’t really do it for the first ten minutes but we really got into it. I thought we were the way better team, we worked so hard - it is just unreal. Jonny has that instilled into us, that positivity and our team culture - we never die down, we’re always ready, next ball, next ball, heads up and move on.”
The St Mary’s player gave an insight into how the team kept fighting back: “We don’t think on the last ball and I know that when that second Tyrone goal went in during the second, I was thinking no but we drove on again.
“We even missed chances again but the girls in the forward line, Ailbhe, Gucks, Muireann, the shots they’re putting over are class,” said Sarah before adding of her own shot hitting the crossbar in the first half: “I know, we forgot about them fairly quickly but they’ll come eventually - maybe!”

If there is one thing Sarah won’t change, it is feeling like underdogs: “I know we were complete underdogs coming in, everybody had written us off but that’s the way we love it, we love being underdogs. Against Wicklow, I don’t know - we might keep it as underdogs, that’s the way we play, we play best when we’re underdogs.”
