With the excitement building ahead of Sunday week’s TG4 LGFA All-Ireland IFC Final, manager Jonny Garrity has urged his players to enjoy the build-up to the Croke Park clash with Tyrone while retaining their focus on lifting the Mary Quinn Cup.
Speaking at the Leitrim LGFA Press night, Jonny told the Observer that he does not believe in insulating his plates from the occasion: “The excitement around Leitrim is great and you see more and more now that managers are trying to insulate their players from it and not make them available at all. I’d be against that because I think it is part of our job to promote the game, to make sure that players are available to the media and trying to advertise this fantastic occasion that is going to be coming up.
“But at the same time, we want to narrow the gaze really from tonight on and ensure that the girls are focused on what really matters. These things, as brilliant as it is and the fantastic noise and colour that is coming from the clubs and the public in general, that’s not going to win you a match, certainly not by themselves and it is important that we concentrate fully on the performance that hopefully will win the match.”
Striking a balance between enjoying the occasion and preparing for the match is Jonny’s focus right now: “It does become incumbent on me as a manager and us as a management team to strike a balance and to ensure that the girls are enjoying the run-up to what, in some cases, will be the biggest match of their lives and we hope there will be bigger to come.
PLENTY TO WORK ON FOR FINAL SAYS GARRITY AS LEITRIM FINISHING LEFT HIM WORRIED
“But you certainly don’t want the game to get lost in that hype so it is a case of enjoying the build-up but at the same time, we have to stay grounded and keep the noise out to a large degree and maximise our chances of getting the performance that we’re after.”
