“I’m lost for words, it is really emotional - I cannot believe we are All-Ireland champions!” is probably the best description to describe how Leitrim’s players were feeling after last Sunday’s TG4 LGFA All-Ireland Intermediate Final, the only surprise was that they came from Eimear Quigley who capped a fantastic debut season with an All-Ireland title.
Underneath the cavernous Cusack Stand, Eimear struggled to comprehend an incredible year as the celebrations continued loudly in the Leitrim dressing room: “I’m lost for words, it is really emotional, I cannot believe we are All-Ireland champions! Little did we know earlier this year that this was how it was going to end up but we believed in ourselves.”
A newcomer to the Leitrim squad, Eimear paid tribute to her teammates for helping her adapt to the demands of Senior inter-county football: “What a year, I can’t really complain. I am so grateful to be in there, they’re a great group of girls, I couldn’t be happier.
“I think anyone can come in and do the exact same job - I’ve been tasked with a few challenging roles throughout the championship but they’ve made me better as a player so just a great experience.”
Quite a few players highlighted the bond in the Leitrim camp and Eimear was no different: “I have a little bit of experience, I played underage and did a little bit in 2019, 2020. I knew most of the girls but I just wanted to challenge myself. I can see how it can be daunting coming into a senior squad but we’re all best friends.”

Sunday was a little bittersweet for Eimear as her Annaduff clubmate Vivienne Egan missed out through injury but the Annaduff duo made sure to lift the Mary Quinn Cup together: “Obviously it is bittersweet for Vivienne but we lifted that Cup together, she is just as much a part of the team as anyone else and this is as much for her as any of the girls.”
As for the celebrations, Eimear promised to enjoy herself - asked how long they will celebrate for, Eimear said “Just a little while - I’ve a week booked off and I don’t think you’ll see me at work any time soon!”
