Leitrim hurling has been deeply shocked with the passing of Michael Coleman, a man whose name will forever be synonymous with the development and love of the game in the county.
Michael's influence on the hurling community was immense, and his commitment to the sport went far beyond just coaching; he shaped the lives of countless players and brought a unique spirit to every match and training session he led.
Before becoming a highly respected coach, Michael had a distinguished playing career that cemented his place as a hurling great. A proud Galway man, Michael's skill and determination on the field were evident from an early age. He was a key figure for Galway, contributing significantly to the team’s success.
One of the crowning moments of his playing career came in 1988, when he was part of the Galway team that claimed the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, a victory that remains one of the proudest moments in the county’s hurling history. Michael’s role in that achievement was pivotal, playing with grit, heart, and an unwavering commitment to his team.
In addition to his All-Ireland triumph, Michael’s individual performances were recognized with three All-Star awards, a testament to his excellence on the field. His ability to dominate and influence games, whether in defence or attack, made him one of the most admired players of his generation.
The All-Star accolades reflect the respect and admiration he earned from teammates, opponents, and fans alike.
Michael's roots in hurling were firmly planted in his beloved Abbeyknockmoy club, where his passion for the game first took shape. Abbeyknockmoy, a club with a proud history, was where Michael’s love for hurling blossomed, and it was here that his skill and leadership began to shine. He brought immense pride to the club, helping to develop a hurling tradition that would continue to influence future generations.
Abbeyknockmoy shaped Michael into the player he became, and he, in turn, gave back to the club with a tireless work ethic and dedication. The club and its members held a special place in Michael's heart, and his legacy there remains etched in its history.
After transitioning from his playing career, Michael's contributions to the sport continued as he took on the role of coach and mentor. As Leitrim’s hurling coach from 2015 to 2019, alongside manager Martin Cunniffe, Michael dedicated himself to growing the game.
Under their leadership, the Leitrim hurling team achieved a historic triumph, winning the Lory Meagher Championship - a crowning achievement for the team and a moment that will forever be remembered. Michael’s experience as a player with Galway, and his deep-rooted understanding of the game from his time with Abbeyknockmoy, undoubtedly shaped his ability to bring out the best in the Leitrim team. He built a squad that not only won but also played with pride, unity, and heart.
Michael’s belief in the potential of every player was unwavering. His approach was always encouraging yet challenging, pushing players to be the best they could be - on and off the field.
The Lory Meagher victory was a testament to his leadership, vision, and tireless work ethic. His coaching was defined by a commitment to developing each individual, and that success didn’t just happen overnight - it was built on years of hard work, passion, and a love for the game.
Beyond his coaching, Michael’s passion for the sport was a shining example of the power hurling has to bring people together. He inspired pride in the green and gold of Leitrim hurling and showed what could be achieved through hard work, determination, and unity. He was a leader not just in the technical aspects of the game but in showing his players how to embody the values of resilience, respect, and teamwork.
Michael’s passing is a huge loss, but his impact will not be forgotten. His contributions to both Galway and Leitrim hurling, and his club Abbeyknockmoy, are etched into the history of the sport. For those fortunate enough to have worked with him, they will carry his teachings and his passion for the game forward.
To Michael’s wife, Mary, daughter Sinéad, son Dara, extended Coleman and Cooley families, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him, our deepest sympathies are with you. Michael’s spirit will forever be a part of Leitrim hurling, Abbeyknockmoy, and the wider hurling community, and the mark he has left on the sport will continue to inspire future generations.
Rest in peace, Michael. You gave so much to hurling, to Galway, to Abbeyknockmoy and to Leitrim, and your legacy will endure for years to come.
