Many sports stars tell you they pay no heed to what’s written about them in the media but Muireann Devaney firmly scotched that notion after last Saturday’s Sweeney Oil LGFA SFC Final, revealing that suggestions Glencar Manorhamilton were vulnerable this year added fuel to their fire.

Speaking after winning the Player of the match award, Muireann disagreed with the notion that the champions were vulnerable: “You see everything that's written about you, about the team and you know, there's nothing in our performances this year that showed that we're vulnerable.

“The Leitrim Senior Championship is an absolutely brilliant competition and there's nothing between any team and I think that showed. Every time we read that Glencar Manorhamilton were vulnerable, it gave us an extra bit of motivation. You know, there's absolutely nothing vulnerable about that team.

“I suppose this year we've gone through a bit of a transition  - we lost one of our best players in Karen Connolly in the middle of the championship and that leaves nothing easy. We got to grips with it  but I am absolutely over the moon. I do think our performance today in the second half was a step above the rest and I am absolutely honoured to say that.”

Muireann  expected the tough challenge Manor got from St Joseph’s: “It's amazing to win again but before halftime, it wasn't looking like it . We got in and we regrouped but we expected nothing different, since Joseph’s are a brilliant team - we've never denied that.

REACTION: SIXTH TIME MEANS JUST AS MUCH AS FIRST FOR CAPTAIN DEARBHLA ROONEY

“There's nothing between the two teams and they've got great players so we knew they were going to get their purple patch and they did. Thankfully, we got a goal before halftime and we went in level. But we never panicked.”

Muireann also felt that others deserved the player of the match: “I don't know if I deserved it or not.  Cammie, the likes of Anna and Dearbhla and Aoife Gilmartin there, Leah Fox at half forward, you could have given it to anyone on the team. I'm not into ‘player of the match’ awards or anything like that and if it went to anyone else, I would have been chuffed as well.

“When you have half forwards like Leah Fox, Aoife Gilmartin and Rebecca Rooney, it's probably the best half forward line in the county between running and being able to spot a pass. So, I have the easy job of being inside, they get it into me and look, it worked today in the second half, thank God.”

Next up is the Connacht Club and Muireann is determined to give it a good go: “I think we have the Sligo champions at home and we will be looking for another big performance. We'll not lie down to any Sligo champions so hopefully, in Boggaun, we'll give a good  account of ourselves.”
