Just a week previously against Clare, Leitrim found it difficult to exploit a two man advantage but Wicklow, despite a hugely committed Leitrim display, were able to exploit their numerical advantage to secure a five point victory.

With Leitrim players showing incredible levels of fitness given the time of the year, they made light of the seventh minute dismissal of Tomas Beirne to give the Wicklow defence the run-around for the majority of the first half.

But when Barry McWeeney picked up two yellow cards in the space of three minutes, Leitrim’s resistance finally broke.

Wicklow pointed to the introduction of James Stafford as a major turning point but they were also the first to admit that, with two extra men for the last 23 minutes of normal time, Leitrim just didn’t have the bodies on the field to stop the Wicklow men.
