Late goal sees Mohill to U-16 title

Just a few days after the disappointment of the Senior Final, Mohill had a large measure of consolation when they claimed the Supermacs U16 Championship 13 aside title after an intense battle with St. Brigid’s in Ballinamore last Saturday.

Mohill started off this game with all the possession and eventually got of the mark thanks to a Dearbhaile Beirne point from play. Cait McHugh and Colette Gannon registered two more points for Mohill before St Brigid’s got on the score sheet thanks to a point free from Aileen Maguire after a foul on Chloe Harvey.

Mohill responed with two Dearbhaile Beirne points, one from a free, before Carla Le Guen scored a point after a fine run down the field. Beirne finished off Mohill’ss scoring in the first half with another fine point.

The first half closed with Aileen Maguire scoring a free for St Brigids following a foul on Carla le Guen to leave Mohill on top at half time 0-6 to 0-3.

The second half was played at a lot more pace than the first half and St Brigid’s registered the first score with a fine pointed free by Aileen Maguire. Dearbhaile Beirne responded with a point for Mohill before Aileen Maguire got two more scores, one from a free.

Both sides missed chances before Mohill made the breakthrough with a goal. St Brigid’s side never say die attitude brought gave them the lead in the game for the first time with seven minutes to play courtesy of a fine goal and point by Carla le Guen and a lovely point taken on the run by Ciana Stringer.

Mohill came looking for the equaliser and some great defending by St Brigid’s meant they held out and cleared the lines but only as far as Dearbhaile Beirne who took a shot which was saved by the Sarah McWeeney in the St Brigids goals only to take a deflection by a defender to put Mohill two points up.

Mohill won the following kick out and Eimear Higgins scored a fine point to leave a goal difference with three minutes to play. St Brigids attacked and Aileen Maguire scored a point and at that the final whistle blew to leave scoreline Mohill 2-8 to St Brigids 1-9.
