Captain praises spirit

It was hard for Paddy Maguire to come to terms with last Saturday’s loss but the Leitrim captain was full of praise for the effort put in by the Green & Gold.

“We fought to the very end, we never gave up,” said Paddy, “They just stepped it up a wee bit in the second half and it was hard to cope with them there for ten minutes. They came running at us and they took their scores at the right time.

“But you have to give praise to the lads, I can’t fault any of the lads, they fought to the very last minute.”

Paddy felt that Leitrim responded well from the blow of the Laois goal but the midlanders experience told in the end – “I think we were six points up but after the goal, we responded with a point and I think it was a great reaction.

“We kept the heads up after the goal and were three points up at the break, it was there for the taking but I think they showed their experience at the end, their took their points at the right time.”

The captain also sees a bright future – “We know we have it in us. I think we’re a young team, we’ll work on that and hopefully get out of Division Four next year, I think that is our main aim. We can match the big teams, we were playing a division 2 team today.

“It was great that we could match them. It was only two points in it at the end, it shows it is in us, the character and great pride in the jersey. We’re really disappointed but we’ll regroup and go at it again next year.”
