After an FBD League campaign that saw his Sligo side suffer defeat at the hands of Galway and then record a win over GMIT, Niall Carew was pleased to finish the competition with a win over Leitrim.
Assessing the game, Niall felt, “Leitrim were hard to break down and they can hurt you on the counter-attack.”
He was pleased with the manner in which his side began the second half having gone in level at half time, putting Leitrim’s five scores down to Sligo players losing possession.
“In fairness Leitrim made it very difficult for us. We looked like we could break them down every time we got up the field but they were similar. They got their five scores and they were turnovers in the first half. We were in good positions and we were probably looking for the killer pass all the time when it wasn’t on and in fairness Leitrim were able to get the men back and cut it out.
“In the second half we decided to keep more width, not panic on the ball and keep our structure up front and that worked well for us. It was good to create three or four goal chances and take two of them.”
