Goals win games is a cliche as old as gaelic games but so do keepers according to Martin Dolan after Leitrim’s hard fought win over Limerick in Banagher.
On Leitrim early and some what fortuitous second half goal, the Leitrim manager noted “the old cliché is goals win games and the helping hand of the Limerick ‘keeper (sent the ball) straight to Áine Tighe. No better one in the business than Áine to dispatch it to the net and we really needed it.
“At that stage we were after kicking three or four wides on the trot and we were getting a bit disorganised and the heads were beginning to go drop. That just give the little lift we needed and we followed it on with a couple of very good scores.
“I suppose it should be noted for every goal we scored we had a girl in Michelle Guckian in defence that made maybe three or four excellent saves. When the game was in the melting pot Michelle pulled us out of it two, three maybe even four times.
“Goal scorers get the credit but without Michelle’s performance today we wouldn’t be looking forward to an All-Ireland semi-final,” concluded the Leitrim manager.
