Congratulations to Dean Clancy of Sean McDermott Boxing Club, Manorhamilton who won the light welterweight 63.5kg title at the IABA National Elite Boxing Championships Finals at the National Boxing Stadium in Dublin last Saturday night, January 21.
Dean received a walkover in the final bout from Brandon McCarthy of St Michael's Boxing Club, Kildare, who had picked up a cut in his semi-final victory.
It was a proud night for the Clancy family and the Sean McDermott Boxing Club with Dean's brother Jason fighting in the 80kg light heavyweight final where he lost out to Keelyn Cassidy of Saviours Crystal, Waterford.
Both fighters are trained by their father, Manorhamilton native Jason Clancy Snr.
Dean Snr said it was a unique occasion with a bit of history being made as it was the first time that two brothers boxed in national finals with their father in their corner as coach.
Dean, who is part of the high performance unit at the IABA, will now aim for a place at the next Olympic Games and his success in taking the Elite national title will do his chances of qualifying no harm at all.
We wish him continued success.
