Leitrim fans will be spending lots of time in cars or buses next Sunday as the county's mens and ladies team take on two long journeys as they seek to maintain their unbeaten starts to their respective 2023 National Football Leagues.
With Leitrim hurlers opening their League campaign with back to back wins last Saturday in a hard fought 3-21 to 3-16 over Lancashire, the Green & Gold Senior teams have started the 2023 season with a 100% record. All three teams are now top of their respective divisions as they chase League glory in 2023.
Next Sunday, both the mens and ladies football teams are on the road with Andy Moran's team taking on Wexford in Chadwick's Wexford Park at 2pm in match 3 of the Allianz NFL Division 4 campaign while Jonny Garrity's Ladies side travel to Rathkeale, the venue fixed provisionally, for Sunday's meeting with fellow unbeaten side Limerick in the Lidl LGFA Division 4B.
Both games will test the resolve of fans to cheer on the Green & Gold but with the teams leading the way in the Leagues, they should have strong back from Leitrim fans.
For some Leitrim natives, there was a conflict of interest last Saturday in Avant Money Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada as Lancashire caused Leitrim no end of problems with Ballinamore's George O'Rourke a selector for the visiting side. George, also Assistant Secretary of the Lancashire County Board, won a Leitrim minor hurling championship medal with Ballinamore Sean O’Heslins in his playing days.
The Leitrim link was reinforced with Sean Leonard whose grandparents Packie & Rose McCabe hail from Aughavas involved with the Lancashire hurlers.
