Ballinamore Community School news

Jersey Day was held in Ballinamore Community School.

TY Work Experience
Work experience is an integral part of the TY Programme. We would like to thank all the businesses and organisations who have been very generous in providing valuable experiences in the workplace to our students. The group really enjoyed their recent week of work experience.

Fairtrade Fortnight 2023
As part of our work in Global Citizenship, during Fairtrade Fortnight 2023 students learned more about what Fairtrade is, the benefits of supporting Fairtrade for the farmers and producers of some of our favourite food and drinks such as bananas, tea, coffee and chocolate. This year we looked more critically at the topic with a focus on how climate change is impacting Fairtrade producers.

Ms Cooney and the Social Justice Club organised a Fairtrade stand in the canteen area for students to sample some Fairtrade bananas and treats like chocolate flapjacks and banana muffins and staff enjoyed a Fairtrade Cuppa morning with some nice treats on offer.
Ms Moran, Mr Mullen and Ms Cooney’s CSPE, Geography and Home Economics classes all explored the topic with different groups.
On Tuesday 7th March, we were delighted to welcome Hannah and Aidan from Fairtrade Ireland along with special guest Innocent Owomuhangi who is a Fairtrade tea producer from Uganda to Ballinamore CS. They spoke to students, staff and members of our community about the importance of supporting Fairtrade. It was a brilliant opportunity for students to hear directly from a farmer involved in the Fairtrade programme after all the discussions in class. Thank you to Leitrim County Council, Ballinamore Tidy Towns, Supervalu and Tesco who all were represented at the event on that day also.

An Cailín Ciúin
Mar chuid de Sheachtain na Gaeilge thug daltaí ón 5ú agus ón 6ú bliain cuairt ar an bpictiúrlann i gCora Droma Rúisc inniu chun féachaint ar an scannán “An Cailín Ciúin.” Baineadh taitneamh as tairbhe as. Ádh mór leis an gCailín Ciúin ag Gradam na nOscars.

Jersey Day Fundraiser
Ms Maxwell's TY RE class undertook a course to learn more and raise awareness about Alzheimer's and Dementia through The Alzheimer Society of Ireland. As part of this, they ran a Jersey Day fundraiser with proceeds going to Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland and they raised a total of €500 today. Well done to the TYs and Ms Maxwell for organising it and thank you to everyone who supported and donated to the fundraiser.

Leitrim Student Enterprise Awards
Three groups from Ms Parke's TY Business class represented the school at the Leitrim Student Enterprise County Final at The Bush Hotel in Carrick on Tuesday. 7th March.
They had all worked hard on their reports and displays.
Log Art (team members Ericia Dolan and Roan McCarthy) made wooden decorations, coasters and pot stands. Baking bags (team members Thiana Regan, Dearbhla O'Connell, Niamh Christy, Roise Redican and Jemma Galligan Maguire) were providing ready-made mixes for making cookies and brownies.
Gloss Boss (members Lucy Murphy, Lily Mahon, Dearbhla Gunn and Katie Guckian) made organic lip gloss. All the teams received hoodies for getting to that stage in the competition and congratulations to Gloss Boss who came away with a win in the Special Merit Category.
