Tributes have been pouring in for Sean Clarke from Gortletteragh and Mohill since his passing last week.
The well known businessman and Leitrim GAA, LGFA and club supporter passed away peacefully in the care of The North West Hospice on March 30 surrounded by his loving family.
His largely attended funeral was held in St Patrick’s Church Mohill on Sunday, April 2 with burial in Gortletteragh Cemetery. As a testament to Sean’s popularity the town of Mohill was thronged for his removal last Saturday night and for the funeral on Sunday.
Tributes for Sean came from all corners of the globe recalling his good humour, generosity as well as his support for clubs, charities and locals. He has been noted as a true gentleman.
Leitrim GAA said they wished to be associated with the grief that surrounds the passing of the late Sean Clarke, Forosa, Gortletteragh and Mohill. The County Board stated that Sean was a “a most dedicated Leitrim Supporter and often went to great lengths to support his county at home and away. As recently as last season he cycled to away games, and there’s not much longer a trip to undertake than a trip from Leitrim to Dungarvan on a bicycle in early Spring! A former player with the great Gortletteragh team of the 1980s, Séamus also represented the County at the Underage level.” They acknowledged Sean's support for Leitrim LGFA.
“In 2003 Leitrim Ladies had their first-ever official team sponsor and it was Sean who stepped into the breach and he thus started a trend that has continued to the present day. Even after sponsors changed.”
Mohill GAA called Sean “ a proud Gortletteragh man” and acknowledged his generosity in sponsoring and supporting Mohill GAA. Sean's native club stated, “It is with great sadness Gortletteragh GAA record the passing of one of our lifelong members, coach, manager, sponsor and greatest supporter and friend.”
Tara Ladies LGFA club in London commented, “Sean was a hugely popular figure in both communities, from both a social aspect with his pubs and hotel, along with his commitments to GAA clubs and charity fundraising. Sean was a fantastic advocate of the Tara Ladies over the years whom his late wife Kate (Kathleen) Harte played for in London.”
Mohill Ladies said, “Sean was one of our earliest and greatest supporters. He employed many Mohill, Gortletteragh and Cloone players as well as Leitrim players and always worked the rota around matches and training. We will remember him for his generosity and kindness.”
Sean was a prominent member of The Noel McManus run/cycle club who said, “Right up to last week Sean was working away at ensuring everything was in order.”
Cllr Sean McGowan recalled, “Sean was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. He always had a smile on his face, a kind word for everyone he was in contact with, he was very generous to all local sporting and community organisations.”
Sympathies are extended to Sean's family and friends especially his son Darren and wife Amy, partner Anella, brother Seamus and sister Eileen.
