Many students from Mohill CC took part recently in Scór na Óg, Liatroma

Practicals
This week we had our Home Economics practicals. Third Year students were cooking up a storm. They have been practising for the past number of weeks and months with their teachers and this week saw their hard work pay off. Well done to the students and to the Home Economic department for their hard work and guidance throughout the process.
BT Young Scientist
Sara O'Beirne exhibited her BT Young Scientist project at a "Science for Development" showcase in the Department of Foreign Affairs last week. I mentioned in last week's notes but have since had more details.
Sara was selected to take part in a special showcase for science innovators last week at the Department of Foreign Affairs, organised by Self Help Africa. There she presented her project to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sean Fleming, and many other special guests, including the Head and Founder of BT Young Scientist, Dr Tony Scott.
The Irish Charity organises the event to encourage science students to devise projects that look at challenges and issues that affect people living in the Developing World.
Sara's project-a wind turbine designed to provide a clean and cost-effective source of energy-was one such project.
The award winners receive a bursary, sponsored by Irish Aid, to travel with Self Help Africa on an annual school's study visit to a a country where it is working.
Research Project
Foróige, Mayo Sligo, Leitrim ETB and the Northwest Regional Drugs and Alcohol Task Force (NWRDATF) are carrying out a research study designed to examine the increase of vaping (i.e. e-cigarettes) among children and young people in County Sligo and Leitrim. The study seeks to ascertain information about the nature and extent of vaping (i.e. use of e-cigarettes) among children and young people in Counties Sligo and Leitrim. The study will lead to a better understanding of the salient issues concerning this new social phenomenon and how it is viewed by children and young people in Counties Sligo and Leitrim.
Last week a selection of Junior and Senior students met with the task force team and contributed to the survey. The discussion group involved an open discussion lasting approximately one hour, facilitated by one researcher. The facilitator used a predetermined topic guide based on areas of interest, to steer the discussion regarding: Vaping among children and young people in Counties Sligo and Leitrim. Attitudes to e-cigarettes/vaping. The accessibility and availability of e-cigarette products. Children and young peoples’ perceived health effects of vaping.
Our students really enjoyed taking part in the project. Thank you to Ms Hanly for facilitating this project within our school.
Scór Success
Last week saw the young people of the county out in force, representing their area in Scór na Óg, Liatroima on Sunday last in Drumshanbo. This included many of our students here Mohill Community College. A lot of hard work goes into preparation for Scór events, with young people practising for weeks on end to prepare for their chosen event. Congratulations and well done to all of those who participated.
A special mention to the winners; Saoirse McWeeney in the Solo Singing representing Mohill and to the Novelty Act (Rian Walpole, Eoin O'Reilly, Abbey Murphy, Shane Mayock, Sadie Johnson, Orla McWeeney and Frankie McManus) also representing Mohill. To Senan Mooney, Eamonn Healy, Aobhlinn Maxwell and Emily Gannon, who won the Table Quiz for Annaduff, along with the Set Dancing; Aobhlinn and Emily along with her sister Catherine, congratulations. Bornacoola won in the Ballad Group and again some of our students were involved, namely Rachel and Aoife Mallon and Aoibhín Finnerty who won in the Ballad group for Bornacoola.
Best of luck to these students and their colleagues, in group acts, as they proceed to the Connaught Final in Ballinasloe on April 16th.
First Year Football
In the last of their group games, our First Years had a narrow victory over Ballinamore on the last Friday before Easter. This was a very entertaining, high scoring game with the final score of 9:10 to 8:11. This should see our First Years progress to the knockout stages after Easter. Well done lads and Mr Sheridan.
Baby news
Congratulations to Mr Sheridan and his wife on the birth of their son recently.
Easter
Best wishes and happy holidays to all as we embark on the Easter holidays. We will be thinking of our Leaving Cert students as they undergo their orals in Irish, French and German over the break. We wish them the best of luck. We will see everyone again, hopefully after a relaxing and rejuvenating break. Happy holidays everyone!
