The Marist Sisters in Carrick-on-Shannon will soon be celebrating 150 years since they first came to Carrick, back in July of 1873.

Their involvement in both health and education was of huge significance and benefit, in Carrick and in the surrounding areas.
Generations of children and teenagers received both their primary and post-primary education with the Marist Sisters and St. Patrick’s Hospital provided wonderful nursing care to many, many people down through the years.

To mark this milestone anniversary, they will be celebrating a solemn Mass in St. Mary’s Church, Carrick-on-Shannon at 12 Noon on July 2, followed by refreshments in the Education Centre in Mount St Joseph, formerly the ‘red brick Novitiate’. The entire community is welcome to attend.

They are also extending an invitation to all to share memories, photos, articles about any aspects of the Marist Sisters’ presence in Carrick, for a commemorative book which the Sisters are working on tirelessly, at present. Contributions can be emailed to gilmartinliz9@gmail.com, or posted to the Marist Convent, Mount St. Joseph, Carrick-on-Shannon, by Friday, May 12.
Sr Elizabeth can be contacted at 087 9889096.

Photos would be greatly appreciated and hard copies will be kept carefully and returned to owners without delay. (Please put details of events, dates/years, names of people etc, as well as contact details of the owner on the back of the photos).

School memories can include sporting, musical, drama, extra-curricular activity events, competition successes and failures, experiences of boarding in the school, as well as classroom memories!

The Sisters would love to hear from you, to share as many experiences as possible in this book, which will be an important document, of historical and social interest, in years to come.

If there is a large amount of material submitted, inclusion in the book will be at the Editor’s discretion, in order to record the broadest possible range of years and experiences.
