Discretion needed for three year roads plan

Cllr Enda Stenson tabled a motion at the Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District meeting about the Council's three year road surfacing plan, with the Independent councillor querying if the plan was "feasible going forward."

He said: "I know there are roads that we have on the plan that are in pretty good condition and other roads that have deteriorated cannot be surfaced for a further three years"

Cllr Sean McGowan supported the motion saying that some "discretion" was needed when it came to the roads on the plan.

Darragh O'Boyle, District Engineer, said the plan is "not necessarily set in stone" and that the Council can write to the department and say, "Road A can last another few years but Road C needs investment and they will generally jump on board with us." He added, "there is discretion but we rarely use it."
