The sound of music is loud and clear in The Creamery in Croghan in Co Roscommon where every Sunday night the Croghan Community Choir meet to rehearse. Founded just over a year ago the choir has grown from strength to strength and now numbers almost 40 members ranging in age from secondary school students to retirees.
The idea for the choir came from Eimear Browne who says "I was on Inishbofin on holidays and realised how much I enjoyed an impromptu sing song. For 2 years during the pandemic we couldn’t sing and now we could".
Together with Liz Nugent, they wanted to offer an opportunity to anyone who loved music and just wanted to sing. And so the Croghan Community Choir was formed. The choir sings all types of music with suggestions coming from within the choir. To date they have sung a wide range of music including contemporary pop, traditional Irish, Musical Theatre and African Gospel, to name but a few.
The focus of the Sunday night rehearsals is having fun and singing for enjoyment and the growth of the choir is testament
to this. Eimear Brownes hope for the choir is that people from around the Croghan area and beyond can continue to sing for pleasure and go from strength to strength, making new friends and happy memories in the process.
In the past year the Choir have gone carol singing in aid of the Hospice, have sang at the parish Christmas and Easter Liturgies and were part of the entertainment at this years Carrick Carnival.
Realising the talent that was within the choir and the local community plans were made to showcase this talent and put together a show in The Dock in Carrick on Shannon which will take place on Saturday, November 25.
This concert will feature the Choir, together with local singers Malachy Costello, Ryan Mulligan, Martha Nugent and Shane Beirne, and a specially formed traditional music group.
There will be 2 performances, one at 2pm and one at 7pm and tickets (€15 Adults €8 Children) are available online from www.thedock.ie or Ph 071 9650828.
