Carrick Rugby Club go into the New Year with the chance of most of their teams qualifying for their respective League knock out stages. Time will tell but the chance of Connacht League silverware for a number of teams is very real.
Once the League campaigns are finished, Cup competitions commence which provides an even sterner test for each team flying the flag for Leitrim & north Roscommon rugby.
Seniors: Carrick Seniors lie in fourth position in the Connacht Junior 1C league. They have won two matches, lost three but have two games in hand so they have a good chance to qualify for the League semi final. Team management are hopeful that some key players currently sidelined will be available early in the New Year and overall the team have to start being a bit more competitive especially when on the road.
U18.5: The U18.5's finished second in the league, losing just one game along the way. They have qualified for a home semi-final on January 13. If they get through the semi final they will be on course to meet Ballinasloe again, the one team that beat them in the league.
U17: Following an unbeaten league campaign, Carrick U17s finished top of the table and earned a home league semi-final. Knock out rugby is a different challenge though and this team will have to remain focused to keep their league momentum going and then roll on the Cup competition.
U16: Carrick U16s play amongst the big boys in the 'A' League and are holding their own having won two matches and going down in a couple of league matches by a score or two. This team will be gearing up for a big Connacht 'A' Cup campaign in 2024 and there's no reason for this team, having learnt valuable 'A' Cup Rugby experience in the last two years, to have another good run in this competition.
U15: Carrick U15s are currently sitting in third place in Division 2 after victories over Ballinrobe, Loughrea, Ballinasloe and Monivea. Victory over Gort in their last league match will guarantee them second place in the league and a semi final fixture against Galway Corinthians on January 6-7
U14: Carrick U14s are unbeaten in Division 2, Pool A of their League and have qualified for the knockout stages (home semi final). This team is a great little team that goes out and plays entertaining rugby and the camaraderie amongst the team members is great to see. Let's hope that this team rocks on in their own inimitable way.
U13: Having progressed from Minis Rugby last season and playing in their first year of 15-a-side rugby, Carrick’s U13s have won eight of their nine matches played so far this season. They have four matches left in this non-competitive League (a Connacht Rugby requirement for this League each year) which has no semi-final or final. However this team will relish the opportunity to compete in the Connacht Cup after completion of their league. Their next match is at home against Monivea on Sunday January 14.
