Leitrim to welcome first National Trail Conference

Outdoor enthusiasts are set to descend on Leitrim next month for Ireland’s inaugural National Trail Conference.

The first National Trail Conference to celebrate trails, community, and the great outdoors, will take place from August 31 to September 3 in Carrick-on-Shannon.

Organised by Leitrim Development Company, this landmark event will kick off with a variety of free and ticketed excursions designed to showcase the natural beauty and outdoor potential of County Leitrim.

From family-friendly orienteering in Derrycarne Woods to kayaking and stand-up paddling on Lough Allen, plus a unique opportunity to discover North Leitrim’s stunning waterfalls and walk Alpacas, the event will be a treat for anyone who enjoys the outdoors.

The conference from September 2 and 3 in Carrick-on-Shannon’s Landmark Hotel, is aimed at trail professionals, community groups and landowners and will feature keynote presentations, panel discussions, workshops, field trips, and networking opportunities. It will cover topics such as trail planning, design, maintenance, funding, and advocacy.

A hands-on trail-building workshop, led by seasoned trail builders, Mountain Meitheal North-West, will give participants the chance to apply their newfound knowledge and skills in a real-world setting ensuring they leave with valuable tools to contribute to their communities.

CEO for Leitrim Development Company, Chris Gonley, said: “This first for Ireland will bring together a diverse group of individuals who share a passion for the outdoors and sustainable development.

“Our two-day conference aims to both inspire and educate, giving people a taste of what our beautiful unspoilt county has to offer while learning so much about the potential of trail development to enhance our communities.”
