Calls for AIB service upgrade as Manorhamilton banking woes continue

Dep Frank Feighan TD wrote to AIB requesting a restoration in services at the Manorhamilton branch

Calls for AIB service upgrade as Manorhamilton banking woes continue

AIB ceased cash counter services at the end of 2022

Local businesses in Manorhamilton are facing significant challenges due to recent cuts in banking services. Banking services across Ireland have become increasingly depleted in recent years, and at the end of 2022 AIB ceased its cash counter services meaning customers were unable to lodge money or withdraw cash and can only do so by machine.

Manorhamilton, once home to three banks, saw its Ulster Bank branch close 10 years ago, followed by the Bank of Ireland branch five years ago. This has resulted in the second-largest town in County Leitrim with only a single AIB branch.

Banks services in Manorhamilton are utilised not only by its residents, but also by those from Northern Ireland, given its location as a border town. Concerns have been raised within the community about the effect the depleted banking services are having on the town, with fewer people coming into the North Leitrim town to carry out business.

Sligo-Leitrim TD, Deputy Frank Feighan wrote a letter to AIB following current anxieties voiced by residents. In the letter, he requested an upgrade of services for the AIB branch in Manorhamilton. He also stressed the effect this is having on the town, remarking that the unreliable AIB cash machine has driven customers to go to Carrick-on-Shannon and Sligo, resulting in a loss of business for Manorhamilton.

"Manorhamilton AIB served the border area and consequently a lot of people based in Northern Ireland come  to bank in the town, in fact it is suggested that up to 20 per cent of the bank customers came from Northern Ireland so that means than when those people came to Manorhamilton specifically to deal with their banking business and now unfortunately have no reason to come to the town and perhaps shop there also.

"It is estimated by many of the AIB customers that cash (ATM) machine in the bank branch only works 70% of the time due to constant breakdowns! Hardly a service to be proud off!

"Sometimes the machine won’t take cash or other times it won’t take cheques.

"When the change came in to force every customer was allocated a lodgement card, if there is a problem with the machine in the branch, you have the choice to go to the post office however that same card will not work at the post office, the customer is required to have a lodgement book," Deputy Feighan wrote.

A further concern that Deputy Feighan raised in the letter is privacy and confidentiality issues in the Manorhamilton branch.

"The other issue worth raising is that when these problems present themselves the bank is not private, it is an open office where very good bank officials unfortunately can be heard helping customers and sometimes the customers business can be heard by others!

"My constituents are anxious to emphasise that your staff are excellent in every way but because of these issues they are under a lot of pressure," Deputy Feighan said.

Deputy Feighan asked AIB for a return to counter services in the Manorhamilton branch, full time or at least three days a week or at the very least a second ATM/Internal Cash and Cheque lodgement machine.

"The AIB customers based in North Leitrim deserve this and the town requires a functioning bank with services to continue to operate in Manorhamilton," Deputy Feighan concluded.
