Plans for Ballinamore's first bus shelter unveiled

At this July's Ballinamore Municipal District meeting, plans for a bus shelter in Ballinamore were revealed in reply to a motion by Cllr Gary Prior.

Cllr Prior requested an update on the design and completion timeline for the shelter, as well as information on its proposed location.

"There's never been a bus shelter in Ballinamore. A lot of people that would be using the bus have come to me and made contact especially throughout my canvassing as well," Cllr Prior explained.

"A bus shelter would be more suitable in the town given the elements.

"We've seen the money that's spent on the one in Carrick-on-Shannon recently. The one I'd be comparing it to is the one that's after being done in Mohill out the Dromod road.

"One like that would be very suitable and welcome in Ballinamore."

Leitrim County Council Active Travel team have been consulting the Local Link regarding suitable locations for bus shelters in Ballinamore. The proposed locations are near the new Junction Hub building on the R199 and on the Ballinamore by-pass road. However, establishing a shelter on the by-pass is contingent upon the Council taking the road in charge.

"I was happy enough with the response regarding the location of the bus shelter," Cllr Prior said.

"I did raise a bit of concern about the new bypass, in order for the shelter to go on the bypass that might have to be taken over by the Council and that could take some time.

"There could be a big delay if the bus shelter was proposed for there so ideally the one around the junction would be great if it was possible to get it done in quarter four of this year."

The design for the bus shelter is due to commence this August.

"I was talking to people locally, the original bus stop is in Ballinamore town and it is desirable to leave a stop there for people who are returning from shops.

"Overall the shelter would be very welcome if we could get that going," Cllr Prior noted.
