Hand spinning at the Organic Centre in Sraud, exploring the woodlands of Milltown Wood, Baroque Music at Parke’s Castle and family workshops on how to make prehistoric pottery are among the many free events taking place across Leitrim during National Heritage Week 2024, from Saturday August 17th to Sunday August 25th.
Local heritage groups and organisers, families, communities and individuals in Leitrim have responded to this year’s theme of ‘Connections, Routes and Networks’ by organising events showcasing the best of what Leitrim’s local heritage has to offer. Well over 2,000 events will take place nationwide with a full list available on the National Heritage Week website.
Coordinated by the Heritage Council, some other highlights from this year’s National Heritage Week programme in Leitrim also include:
Harvest Meitheal & Dance - Sowing the Seed Project, Mountallen Eco Farm, Drumshanbo (25 August, 3pm to 5pm) - All welcome to help harvest the patch of organic oats on Mount Allen farm that were sowed in Spring. There will be scythe demonstrations and all are welcome to bring their own scythe or sickle to harvest your own patch.
The Pop-up Leitrim Women's Museum, The Old Courthouse, Drumkeeran (17 August, 12pm to 3.30pm) - The "Leitrim Women Through Time" project invites you to visit Leitrim's Pop-up Women’s Museum. It is accompanied by a display of objects from rural women’s history.
Sunday Steam at the Cavan and Leitrim Railway, Dromod Co. Leitrim (18 August, 1pm to 4.30pm) - Come along and travel behind the 1908 built steam locomotive. See more details here
