Council seeks Government aid in form of animal feed vouchers for Leitrim farmers

The Council has received a request to urge the Government to establish a fodder support scheme that would provide animal feed vouchers.

The motion was proposed by Cllr Paddy Farrell who sought the support of members to call on Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue TD to introduce this, due to the extremely wet summer and severe fodder shortage.

“The fodder isn’t out there,” Cllr Farrell explained.

“The meal vouchers work very well. I’d like to see something introduced to help these farmers out.”

“There is a scarcity of fodder out there,” commented Cllr Justin Warnock. “I think a meal voucher is more practical and a fairer way of doing it.”

Cllr Farrell’s motion was met with widespread support.

“I’d like to add the importance of ensuring that payments are released on time, as expected,” Cllr Fallon added.

Cllr James Gilmartin commented on the importance of animal welfare in relation to fodder.

“Farmers will always do their best to look after their animals but something is going to give, and it’s a massive problem. Something needs to be done,” Cllr Gilmartin added.

“The fodder isn’t out there to be obtained regardless of the price,” said Cathaoirleach Cllr Paddy O’Rourke.

The Cathaoirleach also drew attention to the ongoing review of the TB regulation scheme.

“It has come to the attention of some of the scientists involved that extreme wet conditions seem to exacerbate the incidents of TB in cattle.

“The incidents we’re enduring now are similar to those recorded in the wet year of 1985.

“Making sure farmers have something for next year's income is a priority at this point,” Cllr O’Rourke concluded.
