Carrick-On-Shannon athlete and retired Leitrim firefighter Michael Duignan has won big at the World Firefighter Games in Denmark this week, with potentially more medals to come.
The Carrick AC runner picked up gold medals in the M60 10,000m and 1,500m races, beating out an international pool of firefighter athletes in Aalborg, Denmark.
3,000 firefighters and accompanying families are expected to visit the Danish town to participate in more than 40 sports.
Michael, the longest serving continuous member of Carrick-On-Shannon Athletics Club, won the 10k in an impressive time of 45 minutes and 29 seconds, and cruised past the finish line of the 1500 metre race in a speedy 6 minutes and 16 seconds.
Not one to take it easy, he also finished third in the High Jump and fourth in the cross-country, and competed in the 800 and 5,000m races yesterday, as well as the 5k road race this morning.
Carrick AC congratulated their fellow member in a post online, with many praising Michael on the superb medals result.
"Congrats Michael, a real inspiration to us all!" Carrick AC said in a post on Facebook.
"Thank you all for your lovely kind messages. A proud Carrick on Shannon AC member and Carrick and Leitrim Fire Service (Retired) Member," Michael said in response to the well-wishers.
