Leitrim County Council has rejected a request to build playgrounds in two Carrick-on-Shannon estates - Oaklands and Lis Cara.

Cllr Cormac Flynn proposed the Council construct playgrounds in these two areas.

“I realised how diverse those areas are during canvassing and I also realise that there’s predominately renters in the estates on low income and these families don't have access to the playground at Aura as much as families with maybe two cars,” Cllr Flynn said

“It’s an opportunity to create a bit of social cohesion in the areas and build up community spirit.”

Leitrim County Council stated there is no legal entitlement to do works on these estates as they are private property. In the event that an estate is taken in charge, it still doesn’t confirm ownership of the open space; it remains property of the developer.

The reply further explained that playgrounds in housing estates are currently not in line with the Council’s Playground Strategy 2021 - 2026.

Leitrim County Council can support communities in creating new playgrounds in accordance with the playground strategy. This support may involve help with funding applications, where funding has become available for such developments.

Cllr Des Guckian supported Cllr Flynn’s motion.

“I realise it’s not Council property, but I certainly support the intention of the motion and it has to be done by somebody.

“These are two very large estates and there’s a lot of children in need of suitable play areas,” Cllr Guckian commented.

Cllr Flynn said the reply from the Council wasn’t something he was aware of, but something he will work on.
