Leitrim County Council hears call for comprehensive traffic review on Castlecara road

Concerns have been raised once again regarding traffic measures on the Castlecara road, Carrick-on-Shannon.

The busy road includes Aldi, the Gaelscoil, Shannonside Recreational Campus alongside a number of businesses.

Cllr Cormac Flynn asked councillors for support with regard asking the Council to conduct an extensive, all encompassing review of all traffic calming measures, junctions, sightlines, lighting, and road layouts, to name but some issues on the Castlecara Rd, L3407, in Carrick on Shannon.

“The Castlecara road is immeasurably better and there’s been enormous improvements. But some of those measures were put in prior to some of the developments that have gone on

“The sightlines are very low down. The pedestrian crossing comes upon a lot of people by surprise. The road markings on the pedestrian crossing have worn away over time.

“The ramps were also constantly coming up during canvassing. Cars and jeeps are being thrown around,” Cllr Flynn explained.

“If you’re coming in the direction from Kiltoghert, you come on that speed bump very quickly. There needs to be more notice in advance,” Cllr Reynolds added.

“It’s a very important road, there’s a lot of work and development being done on it and planned to be done, I think we need to get ahead of it and have a conversation on it,” said Cllr Flynn.

A reply from the Roads department explained that a number of improvements have been made on Castlecara road.

A new footpath and cycleway have been built up to the junction at L7414 at Keenaghan, with pedestrian crossings at both ends and one at the Gaelscoil.

The footpath has also been extended near the rugby club entrance.

Traffic calming measures were added and the speed is set to be reduced from 80km/h to 60km/h in coming months.

No further works for additional footpaths or lighting are proposed for the road, however, funding is being sought to upgrade the pedestrian crossing at Keenaghan.
