Leitrim farmers await delayed payments from Department of Agriculture

The issue of delayed payments to farmers from the Department of Agriculture was discussed at September’s Manorhamilton municipal district meeting.

Cllr Pádraig Fallon asked the municipal to write to Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue and the Department of Agriculture to ensure there are no delays with the Department payments to farmers in the municipal.

“Many are awaiting ACRES payments from last year and it’s been raised with me by a number of farmers.

“The importance of these payments cannot be overstated,” Cllr Fallon said.

Payments from the Areas of National Constraints Scheme are scheduled for September 18, BISS and CRISS scheme payments set for October 16, and the remainder balance payments due in December.

Cllr Gilmartin seconded the motion.

“You have bills to pay as a farmer and farmers are very anxious to pay their bills - livestock, creameries, vets and all the rest.

“It really is a Department issue when it comes to payments and it needs to get sorted as it is a yearly thing,” Cllr Gilmartin added.

“There are 2,300 farmers in Leitrim, what they’re worth to the economy in Leitrim has always been undervalued. They need to be valued and looked after,” Cllr Warnock commented.

Cllr Fallon’s motion was unanimously supported across the meeting.
