The call for Leitrim residents to conserve water first came earlier this month with water usage increasing significantly at the Carrick-on-Shannon Water Treatment Plant, customers are being asked to continue being mindful of their consumption to help reservoirs replenish.
Peadar Griffin from Uisce Éireann highlighted the situation, saying, “We are continuing to ask customers in these areas to conserve water to give the reservoirs time to replenish. Any reduction in usage can lead to significant improvements in supply for everyone.”
Griffin added: “It’s important that we all consider our water usage and look at simple yet impactful ways to conserve water. It can sometimes be difficult to know where to start, but even small changes can make a significant difference.”
High water demand can lead to pressure drops, affecting availability for local customers. Uisce Éireann is advocating for straightforward conservation measures. Residents can help by taking shorter showers, fixing dripping taps, and turning off taps while brushing their teeth or shaving, potentially saving up to 6 litres of water per minute.
For farmers, practical steps include checking drinking troughs for leaks and employing dry-cleaning methods to minimize water use when cleaning yards. Rainwater harvesting is also encouraged for various farm activities.
Addressing leaks promptly is crucial, as even minor leaks can lead to substantial water loss and impact supply pressure. Uisce Éireann provides resources for detecting and repairing leaks on its website.
