After their thrilling sell-out run of Dial M for Murder in February, The Breffni Players are back with a production that promises to captivate audiences once again: Seán O’Casey’s The Shadow of a Gunman, directed by the talented Noel O’Callaghan, from 27 to 29 November 2024.

Originally penned in 1923, The Shadow of a Gunman was O’Casey’s sixth play submitted to the Abbey Theatre and marked a significant moment in Irish theatre as the first of his works to be produced there. Set against the turbulent backdrop of the Irish War of Independence, this remarkable play skillfully weaves together threads of both tragedy and comedy, creating a rich tapestry of emotion and insight.

The narrative unfolds in the vibrant streets of 1920s Dublin, where a poet becomes the center of a thrilling rumor—that he is an IRA assassin. Embracing this dangerous mystique, he basks in the attention it brings, particularly from his neighbors, including a spirited young woman who yearns to escape the confines of her tenement life. Her dreams of adventure and a brighter future contrast sharply with the grim realities of their world, setting the stage for a tale that is both poignant and humorous.

The Breffni Players have a storied history that began in November 1943, following a public meeting at what was then known as The Labour Hall (now the site of Gills Garage). This gathering ignited the passion for theatre in the community, leading to the group’s debut production, Nothing in This Life by Louis J Walsh.

Eighty years later, the Breffni Players remain a vibrant part of Carrick-on-Shannon’s cultural landscape, proudly continuing their tradition of performance with at least one production each year (except during the pandemic). Their dedication to bringing engaging theatre to local audiences is unwavering.

Presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd. on behalf of Samuel French Ltd., this amateur production of The Shadow of a Gunman is not to be missed. Join us for an unforgettable theatrical experience this November as The Breffni Players breathe life into Seán O’Casey’s powerful narrative.

Prepare to be swept away by a compelling blend of humour and heartache that will linger long after the final curtain falls!
