With the General Election less than two weeks away, Sinn Féin TD Martin Kenny has called on the government to urgently fund an all-weather pitch in Ballinamore.
“Ballinamore is the only town of its size in the region without an all-weather facility,” said Kenny. “This has been a glaring need for years, and the government must step up.”
“The pitch, proposed by Ballinamore-Sean O’Heslins GAA and Abbey Rovers AFC, is vital to cater to the clubs’ growing numbers. Abbey Rovers is struggling to accommodate players from Ballinamore, Fenagh, Mohill, Cloone, Carrigallen, and Co. Cavan,” Kenny said. “This is about supporting sports and the entire community.”
Kenny also highlighted the town’s role in welcoming newcomers. “Since 2021, Ballinamore has welcomed hundreds of residents under International Protection and Ukrainian Relief,” he said. “The GAA and Abbey Rovers have been instrumental in integration efforts, but they need support.”
He urged the government and election candidates in Leitrim to back the project. “This facility is essential. It’s time for action.”
