Michael Feeney honoured as Leitrim person of the year

45-minute speech leaves a lasting impression at Leitrim Guardian launch

Leitrim Guardian 2025 launch celebrates county pride and achievement

Family members of Michael Feeney celebrate Leitrim Guardian Person of the Year 2025 award in the Landmark Hotel Carrick on Shannon on Sunday Nov.24.2024.

The Landmark Hotel in Carrick-on-Shannon was abuzz on Sunday, November 24th, as the 57th edition of the Leitrim Guardian was officially launched. The event, a highlight of the county’s cultural calendar, celebrated the achievements, heritage, and community spirit of Leitrim.

The night’s centerpiece was the presentation of the Leitrim Guardian Person of the Year Award to Michael Feeney, a native of Killargue now living in Dublin. His decades of dedication to Leitrim’s GAA, tourism, and community development were met with enthusiastic applause as he took to the stage to deliver an impassioned 45-minute speech.

“Leitrim has always been home, no matter where life has taken me,” Feeney began, visibly moved. “This county’s spirit, its people, and its stories have been my anchor and my inspiration. This award is not just for me; it’s for everyone who believes in the power of community and the importance of giving back.”

While his heartfelt words resonated with many, a few attendees were seen checking their watches as the speech stretched on. However, the sincerity and pride in his voice left an undeniable impact.

The award was presented by Breege and Michael Mulvihill, winners of the 2024 Leitrim Guardian Award, alongside editor Gerry Fox and Guardian Chairman Hubert McMorrow. Feeney was joined on stage by his wife Patricia and their grandchildren, who beamed with pride as the family celebrated the honor. Feeney and Patricia were also presented with a handcrafted beech wood piece by Mohill artisan Roy Humphries, a fitting tribute to their deep roots in the county.

Reflecting on the magazine’s history, Feeney recalled: “It was concern about the really difficult situation in the county at that time that led Michael Fox from Manorhamilton to establish the Leitrim Guardian in 1968. The purpose of the high-quality magazine, which of course it is today, was to raise confidence and pride in Leitrim and to herald the community-inspired economic rejuvenation of the county, led by small-scale industries and the promotion of the county's natural beauty.”

Another tribute highlighted Feeney’s steadfast commitment:
“Michael Feeney embodies the spirit of Leitrim—hard work, dedication, and a belief in the power of community. This award couldn’t have gone to a more deserving recipient.”

The launch also honored other noteworthy contributors. Cormac McCann accepted the Leitrim Guardian Posthumous Award on behalf of his late father, Brendan McCann. Emily Cullen received the Poetry Award, presented by Gabriel Cronin of Cronin's Dental Laboratory in Drumshanbo, while Harry Mooney was awarded the McManus Literary Award.

Notable guests included Declan Bohan, Secretary of the Leitrim GAA County Board; former Senator Paschal Mooney; Cllr. Mary Bohan; and Sean Flynn. Family and friends of Michael Feeney filled the room, celebrating not just his personal achievements but the collective pride and progress of Leitrim.

As the evening drew to a close, Feeney’s earlier words echoed in the minds of many: “The pride we share in Leitrim is something that binds us together, no matter where life takes us.”

The Leitrim Guardian 2025 launch was a celebration of the resilience, creativity, and dedication of Leitrim’s people. Though Feeney’s speech might have tested patience for its length, his genuine passion left no doubt about his love for his home county.
