Leitrim’s polling stations were infused with a sense of awe and admiration today as 100-year-old Breegeen Monaghan from Carrick-on-Shannon made her way to the ballot box. Proving that age is no barrier to civic engagement, Breegeen marked her milestone birthday by casting her vote, embodying the spirit of democracy in action.

Accompanied by her family, including daughters Bernadette, Ann, and Marese, and sons Aidan and Brendan, Breegeen’s appearance at her local polling station left a lasting impression. Adding to the day’s celebrations, her grandchildren Rory and Clíodhna King flew in from Australia to surprise her, making this not only a day of democracy but also one of heartfelt family connection.

“It’s incredible to witness Breegeen voting on her 100th birthday,” said a fellow voter. “She’s an inspiration to us all.”

Early reports from polling stations across Leitrim suggest a strong turnout, with voters braving the chill to make their voices heard. But it’s Breegeen’s act of determination that has captured hearts, serving as a powerful reminder of the importance of showing up for your community and your country.

Polling stations remain open until 10 p.m., and officials say they expect voters numbers to increase after 5 p.m. this evening.
