The Construction of a new bridge, that will replace Hartley Bridge, which is located between Carrick on Shannon and Cootehall will begin next year.

Construction of new Bridge to take place in Leitrim next year

Earlier this month, Leitrim County Council was granted planning permission to demolish Hartley Bridge and build a new bridge in its place around 25 metres away.

The works are expected to take around two years, Joseph Gilhooly, CEO of Leitrim County Council told Shannonside.

Leitrim County Council and Roscommon County Council both put forward applications to replace the century-old bridge in 2021 due to it deteriorating with concrete falling away.

At the time, Leitrim council explained that repairing the existing bridge was not an option due to the repair cost and the fact it would continue to deteriorate.

The bridge, which is located between Carrick on Shannon and Cootehall is an old reinforced concrete bridge which is over 100 years old with a 3-tonne weight limit due to its concrete structure falling away.

Earlier this year Leitrim County Council was allocated €500,000 in government funding for the project as part of a national package for works on regional and rural roads.
