Four projects in Leitrim have been awarded a combined €108,509 from the national Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS) 2025, part of an €8.1 million package designed to conserve Ireland’s architectural heritage. The BHIS supports the repair, restoration, and protection of historic structures—from modest traditional homes to landmark public buildings—and this year’s initiative includes more than 650 projects nationwide.

Among the Leitrim awards, Drumlease Church of Ireland in Dromahaire received €50,000. St. Mary’s Church in Gortletteragh, Mohill was allocated €21,536, while Farnaught former National School in Farnaught, Mohill was granted €19,773. In addition, Red Bank Restaurant on St. George’s Terrace in Carrick-on-Shannon secured €17,200. These projects will benefit from expert guidance provided by Architectural Conservation Officers and local authority staff, ensuring that historic structures continue to contribute to community identity and vibrancy.

Minister of State for Nature, Heritage, and Biodiversity, Christopher O’Sullivan TD, stated, “In keeping with our commitment to protect our heritage as a vital national asset, I am pleased to support these projects. Conserving our historic buildings enriches our towns, villages, and countryside.” Alongside BHIS funding, property owners and custodians are expected to invest an additional €29.5 million from private sources—a significant partnership that bolsters traditional building skills and ensures the longevity of Ireland’s historic fabric.

Moreover, €1.25 million of the total funding is earmarked for thatched buildings. This includes €600,000 from the Historic Thatched Buildings stream, supplemented by €650,000 from the main BHIS allocation, with Leitrim receiving €5,000 in thatch-specific support. The BHIS 2025, along with the Historic Thatched Buildings Scheme, will open for new applications this July for projects due for completion next year, further securing the nation’s architectural legacy for future generations.
