With 1,500 participants registered, Drumshanbo is all set for the Tony McGowan Run—and it’s already sold out. This Sunday, 16 February, runners can choose from a Half Marathon, 10km, or 5km, with chip timing, finishers' medals, and a vest for every finisher ensuring the day is as rewarding as it is fast-paced.

“This race isn’t just about running; it’s about community and legacy,” says Eilis McGowan, the event’s dynamic chairperson. “We kicked things off in 2013 as a small fundraiser for Allendale, and I remember when we literally sold out within the first week of January. That excitement shows how much our community loves coming together.”

Eilis adds, “This event is my tribute to my dad, Tony McGowan—a dedicated teacher, community leader, and one of the founders of the Drumshanbo athletics club. His spirit lives on with every stride our runners take.” She’s proud of how the race has grown over the years and how it honors Tony’s commitment to local sports and community welfare.

The half marathon course is a breezy, single loop with just a few gentle hills—ideal for smashing personal bests. Plus, runners get the unique thrill of pounding the pavement along Ireland’s first floating boardwalk at Acres Lake, enjoying spectacular views along the “blue way.”

“It’s not just the route that makes this race special,” Eilis explains. “Our local community is outstanding. From 100 to 120 volunteers handling everything from registrations to serving teas and coffees, every bit of help adds to the magic of the day.”

The Tony McGowan Run is also a race with a heart. “Every year, we donate a portion of our proceeds to local causes,” Eilis notes. Past donations have supported Alzheimer’s care, the Rapid River Responders, and local staff at Northwest. This year, part of the funds will boost the Baby Harrison Smith Fund, supporting a local family with a newborn facing spina bifida.

Last-minute bib swaps? No worries—just drop a message on the event’s Facebook page before the deadline. With its blend of competitive spirit, community vibes, and a legacy that runs deep, the Tony McGowan Run is more than just a race—it’s a celebration of everything that makes Drumshanbo great.

So lace up your shoes, join the legacy, and hit the scenic routes. Get ready for a day that’s sure to inspire, energize, and bring the community together like never before!
