Over €2 million has been paid out under the Croí Cónaithe Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant Scheme, facilitating the return of 42 vacant homes to use, Leitrim County Council has said.
The scheme, which aims to tackle housing shortages by restoring long-empty properties, has received 229 applications in the county to date. Of these, 163 have been approved, allowing refurbishment work to proceed.
Under the scheme, property owners can receive a grant of up to €50,000 to renovate a vacant home, with funding increasing to €70,000 if the property is classified as derelict.
To qualify, properties must have been vacant for over 24 months, built no later than 2007, and either occupied by the owner or made available for private rental. Landlords must register tenancies with the Residential Tenancies Board and provide proof annually.
Leitrim County Council is encouraging property owners with vacant homes to contact the Vacant Homes Unit to explore available grant options.
