Leitrim has officially joined the map of dementia support, becoming the final county in the Republic of Ireland to receive a dedicated dementia-specific day care centre.
The Alzheimer Society of Ireland (ASI) opened the doors of its brand-new Day Care Centre at St. Patrick’s Community Hospital, Summerhill, Carrick-on-Shannon, on Friday, March 22, marking a major milestone in nationwide dementia care.
“This is a proud day for Leitrim,” said Carol Molloy, ASI’s Regional Operations Manager for the North West. “We’re thrilled to finally offer this essential service locally, where it’s needed most.”
The Centre provides a safe, welcoming environment designed to enhance wellbeing, promote social interaction, and offer vital respite for carers. For families who’ve long been waiting for support close to home, it’s a game changer.
Minister for Older People Kieran O’Donnell, T.D., praised the opening: “The Government is committed to expanding dementia care. This centre is a direct result of that commitment, and I look forward to working with ASI to develop even more services.”
Siobhan O’Connor, ASI’s Head of Operations, called the launch “a moment of celebration,” noting that with Leitrim now on the map, every county in the Republic of Ireland has an ASI Day Care Centre. “It’s taken time, but today is about the families we can now help,” she said.
There are currently 64,000 people living with dementia in Ireland, with that number expected to rise to over 150,000 by 2045. The need for community-based services has never been greater.
The Leitrim centre is now open and welcoming clients. For more information, visit www.alzheimer.ie or call the Alzheimer National Helpline on 1800 341 341.
