Gardaí warn of scams targeting private sellers of electrical goods in Sligo and Leitrim; verify payments before handing over items.
An Garda Síochána in Sligo and Leitrim are warning the public to be cautious of scams when selling electrical goods privately.
Gardaí in the area have received a number of complaints from people who were caught in a scam where a phone was handed to a buyer in good faith, but the seller was never paid. Instead, the seller was shown a screenshot of a bank account indicating a payment was pending; in reality, this was a fake, edited image.
“Please ensure that when selling an item privately, you are certain that the money is lodged in your account before handing over goods to the potential buyer,” An Garda said in a Facebook post.
It is also recommended that sellers keep a record of the phone's IMEI number, which can allow the phone to be tracked. The IMEI number can be obtained by dialing *#06# on the phone's keypad.
If you have any doubts or queries, please contact your local Garda station.
