Age & Opportunity has announced a €13,350 funding allocation to 43 groups across Leitrim, aimed at encouraging physical activity for older people. The funding is part of the Age & Opportunity Active National Grant Scheme, a partnership with Sport Ireland, designed to promote the health and well-being of older adults through recreational sports and physical activities.
This year's funding supports a range of activities, including pickleball, kurling, tai chi, and aqua aerobics. Nationwide, the scheme has allocated €300,000 to 988 groups, including Active Retirement Groups, Men’s/Women’s Sheds, and care settings. These activities help older people stay active, socially connected, and improve their physical and mental health.
Minister for Arts, Culture, Communications, Media, and Sport, Patrick O'Donovan, expressed his support for the initiative: “As part of the Government’s commitment to a Sport for All approach, we are dedicated to increasing participation in sport and physical activity across all age groups. The Age & Opportunity Active National Grant Scheme is an important step in ensuring that older people have the opportunity to participate in activities that offer both physical and mental health benefits.”
Locally, some of the successful Leitrim groups include 24/7 Family Carers, Annaduff ICA, Carrick-on-Shannon Tennis Club, and Ballinamore Men's Shed. The funding will help these groups purchase equipment and organize activities specifically designed for older people, creating opportunities for them to engage in physical activity and reap the associated health benefits.
Sue Guildea, Active Programme Manager at Age & Opportunity, said: “We are thrilled to support these local groups across Leitrim. The impact of this funding goes beyond just physical health – it’s about fostering a sense of community and connection for older people, helping them to stay engaged and active. We are proud to see the positive changes this programme is making in people’s lives.”
Through the Active National Grant Scheme, over 32,000 older people nationwide participate in physical activities each year, helping them stay fit and connected. The scheme is funded by Sport Ireland and delivered with the support of the HSE and Local Sports Partnerships.
