Members of a Leitrim dance school are heading to Spain this year to take part in the Dance World Cup this July and locals are being asked to support them by attending a quiz night in Carrick-on-Shannon next Thursday.

The Victoria Walker Dance School, eight of whose students recently qualified to represent Ireland at the competition, is calling on the local community for support at a special Quiz Night Fundraiser on Thursday, 22 May 2025.

The event will take place at The Barrelstore, Carrick-on-Shannon, starting at 8pm. Entry is €10 per person, with teams of up to four welcome; to book a table, Whatsapp 085 261 8880.

Winning team and raffle prizes include donations from the Landmark Hotel, The Oarsman, Enhance Beauty, Woodies, Lovage Café and Victoria Walker Dance. Proceeds will go towards helping the Victoria Walker Dance School team uniforms, costumes and other expenses when they attend the World Cup in Spain this July to compete on the world stage.

The Victoria Walker Dance School, with classes in Boyle, Carrick-on-Shannon, and Ballinamore, is one of only eight dance schools in Ireland to qualify for the prestigious World Cup finals. The team will join over 120,000 dancers from 66 countries at the nine-day event. The Victoria Walker students range from nine to 14 years old and hail from Boyle, Cootehall, Croghan and Ballaghaderreen in Roscommon and Riverstown, Sligo, and all attend classes in Carrick-on-Shannon.

Principal Victoria Walker stated: “The global standard is very high with over 120,000 dancers from 66 countries competing each year, so it was a welcome surprise to qualify for the finals in Spain this July. I’m already immensely proud of the dedication and resilience that my students have shown in getting through to the World Cup Finals, which is a great achievement. Team Ireland is small, but we hope to make the most of an amazing experience performing and look forward to supporting our fellow Team Ireland dancers.”
