Eivers Lane Childcare in Mohill is set to receive a major boost with the announcement of €750,000 in government funding to expand its services.
Carrick on Shannon Councillor Maeve Reynolds says this is an important step for the area. “When I was canvassing this time last year, one of the most common issues I heard on the doorsteps was the lack of childcare spaces … This funding will be a massive boost for the area.”
The childcare facility which has programmes and services for children from the ages of six months to 16 years, is the only facility in Leitrim to receive funding of the scheme.
The funding comes under the Building Blocks Extension Grant Scheme, part of a wider €25 million national investment announced today by Minister for Children, Disability and Equality, Norma Foley.
The funding will allow the community-based service to purchase and fit out a new premises, with the goal of creating 44 additional full-time early learning and childcare places for children aged one to three.
“I’m absolutely delighted to see this substantial investment in Mohill,” said Minister for Further Education Marian Harkin. “This will help meet local demand, support working parents, and give children in the area a strong start.”
“This is a real win for Mohill,” she added. “It ensures that families in rural areas like ours have access to modern, high-quality childcare infrastructure that supports their daily lives and builds for the future.”
The project is one of 49 across the country to be shortlisted for funding, and the only Leitrim-based project. Under the scheme, eligible services can receive grants of up to €750,000 to extend or replace facilities.
Deputy Frank Feighan also welcomed the funding, adding, “I wish to thank and acknowledge the management team at Eivers Lane for an excellent application”.
