Thousands set to descend on Drumcoura for Ireland’s biggest country bash

Cowboys & Heroes festival back in Drumcoura with stellar lineup and easy parking

Thousands set to descend on Drumcoura for Ireland’s biggest country bash

Crowds enjoy country music bands at the 2024 festival.

As Drumcoura City, Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim prepares to welcome thousands of country music enthusiasts for the Cowboys & Heroes Festival from May 30 - June 2, festival organizer Simon Power reflects on the event's growth and vision. "The idea was making the 'Electric Picnic of Country Music'," Power explained.

"The first year was 2014; we were out of action for two years because of COVID but we managed to bounce back stronger than ever," Power continued. "The event has definitely seen younger crowds in recent years, and I believe this will add to the longevity of the festival."

Power emphasized the dedication involved, stating, "Every year comes with new challenges but it is a labour of love. The sense of satisfaction when we get through it all and see so many happy festival-goers is just incredible."

Expressing his commitment to Leitrim, he added, "I have a sincere passion for Leitrim, I love it here and want to attract as many new people to the county as possible. Once here, the place speaks for itself. Cowboys and Heroes has been a great driver for tourism."

Headlining this year’s festival is Jimmy Buckley, joined by a star-studded lineup including Derek Ryan, The Tumbling Paddies, Declan Nerney, Una Healy, Robert Mizzell, Patrick Feeney, and Paul Kelly. The four-day celebration includes line dancing demos by Gerard Butler, a Country Disco hosted by David Harrington, and a €1,000 jiving competition.

The festival is packed with Americana, from classic car displays to thrilling barrel racing and Western horse shows. A crowd favourite, the Best Dressed Cowboy/Cowgirl contest adds even more flair.

For families, Monday’s Family Day features amusement rides and kids’ entertainment. There’s also the “Pay What You Can” entry on Monday, with proceeds going to the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

Food is a major feature too, with a bustling food village offering everything from barbecue to gourmet pizza. Western apparel, cowboy hats, and boots will be available from Ariat’s pop-up shop. Five themed bars—including the famous Saloon—will stay open until 2am.

Camping options include campervan pitches (€70 for the weekend) and tent spots (€30 per person), all next to the venue. Parking is €5 a day and shuttle buses run regularly from Ballinamore and Carrigallen.

Single-day tickets are €41, with full weekend passes available for €100 plus booking fee. Tickets are on sale now at www.cowboysandheroes.ie. Don’t wait—day wristbands may sell out fast.
