St. Joseph’s National School in Leitrim Village
St. Joseph’s National School in Leitrim Village has been named one of just 15 finalists in the 2025 Our World Irish Aid Awards, earning national recognition for its powerful and heartfelt entry focused on global issues. The 4th class pupils and their teacher will travel to Dublin Castle on Friday, May 30th, for the prestigious awards ceremony.
Their project, titled “What We Like and Dislike About Our World”, impressed judges with its creative storytelling and emotional impact. Combining spoken word, vivid illustrations, and a symbolic group artwork, the children explored themes such as poverty, pollution, kindness, equality, and peace. They also created a colourful blanket, with each student designing a personal square representing their own commitment to making a positive difference. The finished quilt, stitched together by the class, has been described as a striking symbol of unity and shared hope.
Maura Williamson, teacher of the class, said: “We’re beyond proud of the children. They poured their hearts into this project and really thought deeply about what kind of world they want to live in. Their ideas are inspiring — and they show that young people are more aware and compassionate than we often realise.”
The Our World Awards celebrate primary schools across Ireland that engage with the UN’s Global Goals for Sustainable Development. Now in its 20th year, the programme encourages students to learn about global justice and take action. Categories this year include STEM, Global Citizenship Education, Creative Star, and the coveted School of the Year.
Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora, Neale Richmond TD, congratulated the finalists: “Each of these projects shows remarkable insight and empathy. I look forward to meeting the pupils from St. Joseph’s and thanking their teacher for helping foster such a strong ethos of global citizenship.”
The 2025 Our World Awards Final will take place at the Printworks in Dublin Castle on May 30th. For more details, visit www.ourworldawards.ie.
