Ballinamore’s first Camino trek set for July 12th

Over 400 walkers registered for inaugural fundraising trek in aid of Island Theatre

Explore Leitrim and beyond at Ballinamore Camino 2025

The hills of Ballinamore will come alive this Saturday, July 12th, as more than 400 walkers lace up their boots for the first-ever Ballinamore Camino — a scenic and spirited fundraising trek in aid of the Island Theatre.

The event offers a choice of 25km or 35km looped routes, both starting and finishing at the Island Theatre. Participants will pass through some of Leitrim’s most breathtaking uplands, trails and heritage sites, from ancient sweathouses and coal mines to panoramic views atop Bencroy Mountain.

“This is shaping up to be an amazing day for the community,” organiser Jill Stevens said, noting that registrations are heading toward 450 and the weather forecast is looking glorious. “We’re thrilled by the response — and we’re really hoping The Observer will be there to capture it all.”

The Ballinamore Camino promises more than just a walk — it’s a full experience. Registration includes a custom t-shirt, trail map, medal, refreshments at multiple points, and a hot meal at the finish line. Participants will also collect stamps in their ‘Camino passport’ at checkpoints along the way, including scenic spots like Pól an Eas waterfall and Duck’s Cross.

The trek is designed to suit a variety of fitness levels. The 25km loop is perfect for those seeking a manageable challenge, while the 35km route offers a more demanding stretch through boglands, forest trails and mountain paths. The walk is expected to take 6–9.5 hours depending on pace.

With routes weaving through landscapes steeped in nature and history — from the iron-rich hills of Sliabh an Iarainn to the ancient St Brigid’s shrine at Oughteragh — the Ballinamore Camino isn’t just a fundraiser; it’s a celebration of place, heritage and endurance.

Walkers set off from 7am at the Island Theatre, and stewards will be on hand throughout to guide participants. Full details and route maps are available at www.islandtheatre.ie/ballinamore-camino.
