The 45th O'Carolan Harp Festival opened this week, celebrating the legacy of Turlough O'Carolan, the renowned Irish harper. With performances, workshops, and competitions, the festival brings together musicians from around the world to honor O'Carolan’s music.
David Knight, PRO for the festival, said, "The O'Carolan Harp Festival brings musicians together to celebrate O'Carolan's legacy. We’re looking forward to a fantastic week ahead."
One highlight is a concert recognizing Josie McDermott, credited with founding the festival 47 years ago. Knight emphasized, "We’re doing a concert with 40 musicians to recognize Josie McDermott, who was a musician and composer."
The festival includes harp recitals, the O'Carolan International Harp Competition, and the "Harps Together" concert, featuring world-class harpists. Knight also encouraged attendees to try the harp: "If you’ve never played before, you can try your hand at it. It’s easy to learn, and it sounds beautiful from the first pluck."
The festival also features unique traditions like the door dancing competition, a local cultural highlight. "It’s not just about music. It’s about culture, dancing, and history," said Knight.
The O'Carolan Harp Festival remains the oldest harp festival in Ireland, continuing to thrive thanks to community involvement. Knight added, "The support of the community is incredible."
The festival has a packed lineup for the week, including:
Monday 4th of August 2025: The final day includes a wreath-laying ceremony at O'Carolan’s grave at 11:00 AM, followed by a lecture on "O'Carolan and Irish Culture" by Professor Luke Gibbons. The festival concludes with music, song, and dance from Keadue CCE and Olivia Douglas’ performance at 4:00 PM.For more information, visit www.o'carolanharpfestival.ie.
