Leitrim unites for Alzheimer's memory walk in Cloone

Bothar na Naomh is a lovely Recreational, Heritage and Nature Trail that starts at Cloone Village County Leitrim. It is 3.75 km long and takes approximately 1 hour to complete.

The people of Leitrim will come together later this month for the Alzheimer’s Memory Walk supported by Aviva, marking World Alzheimer’s Day with a special community event.

The walk takes place on Sunday, September 21st, 2025, starting at 11am from Cloone Community Centre before setting out on a 5km route along Bothar na Naomh. Families, friends, and neighbours are invited to join in solidarity with the 64,000 people living with dementia in Ireland, and to remember those who have passed away.

Local Champion and Dementia Adviser for Roscommon and Leitrim, Teresa Keegan, will lead the walk. “It’s a special day where people across the globe come together to support those living with dementia and their families,” Teresa said. “Here in Cloone, we’ll walk together to share memories, honour loved ones, and create new moments of joy and connection. I encourage everyone to register now at www.memorywalk.ie and join us on the day.”

Now in its sixth year, the nationwide Alzheimer’s Memory Walk is more than just a fundraiser. In 2024, nearly 3,500 walkers raised over €150,000, helping fund vital services such as daycare, support groups, family carer training, social clubs, memory cafés, and the Alzheimer Society of Ireland’s National Helpline.

With almost 40 walks scheduled across Ireland this year, the event highlights the strength of community action. Whether participants walk in memory of a loved one, in support of someone currently living with dementia, or simply to show solidarity, their steps will make a difference.

Registration is open at www.memorywalk.ie, and participants are encouraged to share their experiences on social media using #ASIMemoryWalk2025 #WalkWithAviva #ASIMakingMemories.
